Sister Marie of St. Peter and the Holy Face

A hidden Carmelite mission

Sister Marie of St. Peter was born Perrine Éluère in Rennes, France, in 1816. She entered the Carmel of Tours and lived the hidden life of a cloistered nun: prayer, sacrifice, obedience, silence, and daily fidelity. Outwardly her life was small. Spiritually, it became connected with one of the most important modern expressions of Holy Face devotion.

In the 1840s she recorded interior communications calling for reparation to the Holy Face of Jesus and to the Holy Name of God. The sins emphasized in this mission were blasphemy and the profanation of Sundays and holy days. Sister Marie understood these sins not as minor irreverences, but as wounds against the honor of God and the love due to Christ.

The Golden Arrow Prayer

The best-known fruit of her mission is the Golden Arrow Prayer. The prayer blesses, praises, loves, adores, and glorifies the Most Holy Name of God in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth. It unites that praise to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament. In this way the prayer repairs blasphemy with adoration and contempt with love.

Sister Marie did not promote herself. She submitted what she received to her superiors and lived under obedience. Her mission was carried forward publicly by others, especially Venerable Leo Dupont. This hiddenness is important. The Holy Face devotion was not born from publicity, but from prayer, suffering, and a desire to console Jesus.

Spiritual legacy

Sister Marie died in 1848 at only thirty-one years old. Her writings and the devotion associated with her continued to spread. She remains a powerful witness that cloistered prayer can bear fruit for the whole Church. Her life teaches that reparation is not anger at the world, but love for God; not despair over sin, but confidence that praise and sacrifice can console the Heart of Christ.
