Blessed Maria Pierina De Micheli was born Giuseppina De Micheli in Milan in 1890. She entered religious life and served in education and formation in Italy and Argentina. From childhood and throughout religious life, she was drawn to console the Face of Jesus, especially in reparation for the kiss of Judas, the insults of the Passion, and the indifference shown to Christ in the Eucharist.

Her devotion was not sentimental. It was rooted in sacrifice, obedience, and love for souls. She wanted the Holy Face of Jesus to be known not as a distant image, but as the Face of the Savior who still seeks love, reparation, and confidence from His people.

The Holy Face Medal

Blessed Maria Pierina became closely associated with the spread of the Holy Face Medal. The medal helped Catholics carry the devotion into daily life. It pointed to the suffering Face of Jesus and to His Eucharistic presence, reminding the faithful that the Lord who was wounded on Calvary is the same Lord hidden in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Blessed Maria Pierina died in 1945 and was beatified in Rome in 2010. Pope Benedict XVI publicly noted her extraordinary devotion to the Holy Face when her beatification was celebrated. Her life remains a strong witness for teachers, religious sisters, catechists, and all who want to unite active service with a hidden life of reparation.
