What Is the Holy Face of Jesus?

The Holy Face of Jesus is the Face of the living Christ contemplated in love, especially in the mystery of His Passion. Catholics honor the Holy Face because the Son of God truly became man, suffered for sinners, and revealed divine mercy through His wounded humanity.

The Face of God made visible

Christian faith begins with the astonishing truth that the eternal Son of God became man. He did not save humanity from a distance. He took flesh, received a human body, spoke with a human voice, looked upon His Mother, His apostles, sinners, the sick, and the poor with human eyes, and allowed His Face to be seen. The Holy Face devotion grows from this mystery of the Incarnation: in Jesus Christ, the invisible God has drawn near.

A Catholic does not adore canvas, paper, a statue, or a medal. God alone is adored. Sacred images are honored because they direct the heart to the person represented. When Catholics look upon an image of the Holy Face, they are invited to adore Jesus Himself, to thank Him for His Passion, to make reparation for sin, and to ask that His image be restored in their souls.

The suffering Face of the Passion

The Holy Face devotion most often turns toward the Passion. The Gospels tell us that Jesus was mocked, struck, spat upon, crowned with thorns, and led to Calvary. His Face, once radiant with compassion and authority, was covered with blood, sweat, dust, bruises, and humiliation. Yet this Face remains the Face of mercy. He accepts shame to heal our shame; He receives contempt to restore our dignity; He is disfigured so that the image of God in man may be restored.

This is why the devotion is deeply reparative. Reparation means offering love where Christ has been insulted, reverence where He has been treated with indifference, praise where His Name has been blasphemed, and faithful worship where Sunday and holy days have been neglected. The Holy Face draws the soul into sorrow for sin, but not into despair. It teaches confidence in the wounded mercy of Jesus.

The Holy Face, Holy Name, and Eucharist

In the modern form of the devotion, the Holy Face is inseparable from the Holy Name of God. Sister Marie of St. Peter recorded a mission of reparation for blasphemy and for the profanation of Sunday. The Golden Arrow Prayer answers insults against God with blessing, praise, love, adoration, and glorification of His Most Holy Name.

The devotion is also Eucharistic. The same Jesus whose Face was wounded in the Passion is hidden under the sacramental veils of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Eucharistic adoration becomes a privileged place to seek His Face. Before the tabernacle or monstrance, the faithful ask Jesus to look upon the Church, sinners, families, the sick, the dying, and all prayer intentions with mercy.

What the devotion should produce

Authentic devotion to the Holy Face should produce conversion, confession, reverence for the Mass, love for the Eucharist, tenderness toward the suffering, and courage to defend the honor of God. It is not meant to become curiosity, fear, or superstition. It is a school of holiness. The soul that looks upon the Holy Face should become more humble, more merciful, more prayerful, and more willing to repair the wounds caused by sin.

The simple prayer of the devotion is this: Lord Jesus, let Your Face shine upon us. Restore Your image in us. Make us Yours.
