St. Nicholas of Flüe

St. Nicholas of Flüe, also known as Brother Klaus, was born in 1417 in the canton of Unterwalden in Switzerland. A farmer, soldier, magistrate, husband and father, he lived the ordinary responsibilities of Christian life before entering the hidden austerity for which he became famous. He married Dorothea Wyss and had ten children. Only after years of family life, public service and serious discernment did he withdraw, with his wife’s consent, to the Ranft valley near his home.

His hermitage did not make him useless to the world. Switzerland in the fifteenth century was troubled by political rivalry, cantonal tension and the danger of civil conflict. Nicholas lived as a penitent and contemplative, yet people came to him for counsel because they recognized in him a man detached from ambition. Tradition says he lived for years with no ordinary food, sustained by the Holy Eucharist, a claim that made his sanctity known throughout the region. His prayer was centered on the Passion of Christ, and the famous wheel image associated with his vision expressed the movement of divine love from God into creation and back again to God.

The most celebrated event in his public memory came in 1481 at the Diet of Stans, when the Swiss Confederation was near division. Nicholas was asked for counsel, and his message helped calm the factions and preserve peace among the cantons. For this reason he is honored as a patron of Switzerland and of peace. His charism was not political cleverness but evangelical detachment: he could speak wisely because he had renounced self-interest.

Nicholas died in 1487 at the Ranft. Catholics remember him as a married saint, a father, a hermit, a mystic and a peacemaker. His life shows that sanctity may pass through family, public service and solitude without contradiction, provided all are placed under the will of God.
