Biography and devotion

Bl. Catherine of St. Augustine: life, patronage, and devotion

Blessed Catherine of St. Augustine was born Catherine de Longpré in 1632 at Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte in Normandy. She became an Augustinian Hospitaller and missionary to New France, where she served the sick in Quebec. Her patronage is closely connected with nurses, caregivers, the sick, and those engaged in spiritual combat. She entered the Augustinian Hospital Sisters at Bayeux while still young and was sent across the Atlantic to Canada in 1648. The journey was difficult, and life in Quebec was physically demanding.

The Hôtel-Dieu cared for settlers, soldiers, Indigenous people, the poor, and the gravely ill. Catherine’s vocation placed her in the hard realities of illness, cold, hunger, epidemics, and missionary danger. Her outward work was nursing; her inward life was intensely mystical. She experienced visions, spiritual trials, and severe temptations. Her spiritual director, the Jesuit Father Paul Ragueneau, later wrote her life, preserving accounts of her union with Christ, devotion to the Holy Souls, and battles against demonic oppression. She also had a deep spiritual connection with St.

Jean de Brébeuf, one of the North American Martyrs, whose intercession she invoked and whose presence she believed assisted her. Catherine offered her sufferings for the salvation of souls and for the mission in New France. Her holiness did not take her away from hospital work. It made her more faithful to it. She cared for bodies while carrying hidden spiritual burdens that few around her understood. She died in Quebec in 1668 at the age of thirty-six.

Devotion to her continued among the Augustinian Hospitallers and in the Canadian Church, and she was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 1989. Blessed Catherine of St. Augustine’s life should be read as a missionary hospital biography: a young French religious woman who crossed the ocean, served the sick, endured mystical combat, and helped plant Catholic charity in Canada.

Her body was later buried at the Hôtel-Dieu, and devotion to her remained connected with Quebec, hospital service, and hidden reparation. She did not become famous through public achievement. Her witness was the offering of illness, exhausting work, and spiritual suffering for the people of a fragile missionary colony.
