Biography and devotion
St. Elizabeth of the Trinity: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Elizabeth of the Trinity was a French Discalced Carmelite nun and spiritual writer born Élisabeth Catez near Bourges on 18 July 1880. After her father’s death, she was raised in Dijon, where she became known for musical talent, a strong temperament, and a growing attraction to prayer. The lively child who once struggled with anger became, through grace and discipline, a young woman deeply centered on the indwelling of the Holy Trinity.
In 1901 she entered the Carmel of Dijon, receiving the name Elizabeth of the Trinity. Her Carmelite life was short but spiritually rich. She desired to become what she famously called “a praise of glory” to God, living in adoration, silence, and union with the Trinity dwelling in the soul. Her letters and retreat writings show a theology of intimacy with God expressed in clear, burning language.
Illness soon overtook her. Addison’s disease caused severe suffering, and she accepted it as a participation in Christ’s Passion. Among her best-known writings are her Prayer to the Trinity, Heaven in Faith, and The Last Retreat. These works have made her one of the great modern witnesses to contemplative life, not because she wrote many volumes, but because her few writings go directly to the mystery of God living within the baptized soul.
Elizabeth died at Carmel on 9 November 1906, only twenty-six years old. She was canonized by Pope Francis in 2016. She is invoked by contemplatives, those seeking interior prayer, and Catholics who wish to live ordinary life with deeper awareness of the Trinity.
Her influence has grown because her doctrine is direct and livable. She taught that the baptized soul is not spiritually empty but inhabited by God, and that recollection is a way of living in that truth. Her famous prayer, ‘O my God, Trinity whom I adore,’ remains one of the great modern Catholic prayers. The last months of her life, marked by terrible physical weakness, turned her teaching on interior union into a lived sacrifice.
