Biography and devotion

St. Juan Macías: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Juan Macías was born in 1585 in Ribera del Fresno, Spain, and died in Lima, Peru, in 1645. A Dominican lay brother, mystic, and servant of the poor, he is patron of the poor, immigrants, and those who care for the hungry. His life began with hardship. Orphaned as a child, he worked as a shepherd and grew into a man of deep prayer, simplicity, and confidence in God.

Drawn by missionary desire, Juan crossed the Atlantic to the New World. After time in Colombia and Peru, he entered the Dominican convent of St. Mary Magdalene in Lima as a lay brother. Lima in his day was one of the great Catholic centers of Spanish America, and it was also home to other saints: St. Rose of Lima and St. Martin de Porres. Juan belonged to this extraordinary spiritual flowering, though his own work remained humble.

As porter of the Dominican house, he received the poor who came to the door. This office became his apostolate. He distributed food, gave counsel, prayed with those in need, and turned a doorway into a place of mercy. Tradition remembers that he fed large numbers of poor people and that food seemed to multiply through Providence. He also had a profound devotion to the Rosary and to the souls in Purgatory, praying constantly for the dead.

Mystical gifts are associated with him. He reportedly received visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, his patron St. John the Evangelist, and other heavenly consolations. Yet he remained hidden, obedient, and practical. His sanctity did not remove him from the poor; it made him more available to them.

Juan died in Lima in 1645. Devotion to him grew around his charity, prayer, and miracles of provision. He was canonized by Pope St. Paul VI in 1975. His life shows how the humble work of a porter can become a great channel of mercy when joined to prayer and love.
