Biography and devotion
St. Alphonsus de Liguori: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was born in Naples on 27 September 1696. Gifted intellectually, he earned doctorates in civil and canon law while still very young and became a successful lawyer. After a painful defeat in court, he turned away from worldly ambition and entered the priesthood.
As a priest, Alphonsus gave himself to preaching, confession, and the poor, especially those neglected in rural areas around Naples. In 1732 he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists, to preach the Gospel to abandoned souls. His missionary work emphasized the mercy of God, the call to conversion, devotion to the Passion, and confidence in the Blessed Virgin Mary.
He became one of the greatest moral theologians in Catholic history. His Moral Theology helped guide confessors away from both harsh rigorism and careless laxity. He wanted priests to lead sinners firmly but mercifully toward God. He also wrote many spiritual works for ordinary Catholics, including The Glories of Mary, The Practice of the Love of Jesus Christ, Visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and meditations on the Passion and the Way of the Cross.
In 1762 he was made Bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti. He reformed clergy, preached missions, cared for the poor, and visited his diocese despite fragile health. Later he suffered severe arthritis and other illnesses, becoming physically bent and nearly immobilized. Misunderstandings within his congregation caused him deep sorrow near the end of his life.
He died on 1 August 1787. Pope Gregory XVI canonized him in 1839, and Pope Pius IX declared him a Doctor of the Church in 1871. Alphonsus is a patron of confessors and moral theologians because he united truth with mercy, doctrine with pastoral care, and deep Marian devotion with tireless concern for sinners.
His final years were marked by suffering from illness, deafness, immobility, and spiritual trials. Yet he continued to write, pray, and encourage confidence in God. Because he understood scruples from pastoral experience, many anxious souls have found in his works a merciful guide rather than a harsh judge.
