Biography and devotion

St. Elizabeth, Mother of St. John the Baptist: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Elizabeth, the mother of St. John the Baptist, stands at the threshold between the Old and New Covenants. The Gospel of Luke presents her as a righteous woman of the priestly line of Aaron, married to the priest St. Zechariah. She is patron of expectant mothers, mothers, families, and those who wait in hope through long sorrow.

Elizabeth and Zechariah were advanced in age and had no child. In the biblical world this was a deep grief, yet Luke says they were righteous before God and walked blamelessly in His commandments. Their holiness was not rewarded immediately. They remained faithful through years of unanswered longing.

While Zechariah served in the Temple, the angel Gabriel announced that Elizabeth would bear a son, John, who would prepare the way of the Lord. Zechariah’s doubt left him unable to speak, but Elizabeth conceived and recognized the mercy shown to her. Her hidden pregnancy became part of the great preparation for Christ.

Her most famous moment came at the Visitation. When the Blessed Virgin Mary entered her house, the child in Elizabeth’s womb leapt for joy. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth cried out, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.’ She was the first person in Luke’s Gospel to proclaim Mary blessed in relation to the Incarnate Lord.

At John’s birth, Elizabeth insisted that his name was John, obeying the angelic command even when relatives objected. Zechariah confirmed it in writing and his tongue was loosed. Their household became a place of prophecy, gratitude, and awe.

Elizabeth’s life is quiet but immense. She carried the Forerunner, welcomed the Mother of God, recognized the hidden Christ, and taught the Church how to wait faithfully until God’s promise arrives.

Her house became the first place where the mystery of the Incarnation was greeted by another human voice. In Elizabeth’s blessing, the Church hears the meeting of the Old Covenant and the New: the mother of the last prophet rejoices before the Mother of the Lord.
