Biography and devotion
St. Zechariah, Father of St. John the Baptist: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Zechariah, father of St. John the Baptist, was a priest of the division of Abijah and husband of St. Elizabeth. He belongs to the opening of the Gospel of St. Luke and is honored as a saint of hope, priestly fidelity and trust in God’s promises.
Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous before God but had no child, and both were advanced in years. While Zechariah was serving in the Temple, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and announced that Elizabeth would bear a son named John, who would go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah. Zechariah doubted the message and was struck mute until the promise was fulfilled.
His silence became a school of faith. When the child was born and relatives expected him to receive a family name, Elizabeth insisted he was to be called John. Zechariah confirmed this in writing, and immediately his tongue was loosed. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he proclaimed the Benedictus: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel. This canticle became part of the Church’s daily morning prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours.
Traditions outside Scripture speak of Zechariah’s death in connection with the violence surrounding the Holy Innocents, though the Gospel itself does not give those details. His certain biblical witness is enough: a priest who moved from hesitation to prophecy, a father who received a miraculous son, and a servant of God whose hymn announced redemption, mercy and the coming dawn from on high.
The Benedictus gives his profile special liturgical importance. Every morning the Church places Zechariah’s words on the lips of priests, religious, and lay people who pray the Divine Office. His temporary silence becomes, in the end, a canticle for the whole Church. That movement from doubt to praise makes him a saint for those who have waited long, suffered disappointment, or needed God to purify their speech before giving them a deeper song.
