Biography and devotion

St. Ubald of Gubbio: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Ubald of Gubbio, also called Ubaldo Baldassini, was born at Gubbio in Umbria around 1085 and died there in 1160. He is honored as a saint, bishop, peacemaker and protector of Gubbio, and he is also invoked against demonic oppression, anger and disorders of the mind. His sanctity was formed in a city where civic rivalries, clerical laxity and political violence could easily destroy souls as well as public peace.

Orphaned while still young, Ubald was educated by relatives and then by canons connected with the churches of Gubbio. He became a priest and eventually reformed the common life of the clergy, insisting that priests live with greater discipline, poverty and prayer. His own life was marked by austerity, patience and an unusual meekness. When insulted, injured or publicly opposed, he refused revenge and used his authority to reconcile rather than dominate.

After fire damaged the city and after factions threatened its peace, Ubald’s influence became even more important. He was chosen bishop of Gubbio in 1129 after trying to avoid the honor, and as bishop he defended his people with courage. Tradition remembers his meeting with Frederick Barbarossa, when the emperor’s forces threatened Gubbio; Ubald’s presence and intercession were credited with saving the city from destruction.

Numerous healings were attributed to him during life and after death. His incorrupt body is venerated at Gubbio, and the famous Corsa dei Ceri, one of the city’s most beloved religious celebrations, preserves his memory with a devotion both civic and deeply Catholic. He remains a bishop-saint whose holiness was shown in reform, forgiveness, courage before earthly power and pastoral love for one particular city.

The continuing Ceri festival is one reason his biography should mention civic devotion, not only private virtue. In Gubbio, Ubald is woven into the city’s identity as protector, bishop, and peacemaker. His incorrupt or well-preserved body, venerated above the city in the basilica that bears his name, gives pilgrims a visible link with the shepherd who once walked out to save his people from destruction.
