Biography and devotion
Bl. Mariano of Jesus Euse Hoyos: life, patronage, and devotion
Blessed Mariano of Jesus Euse Hoyos was a Colombian diocesan priest born in Yarumal, Antioquia, on 14 October 1845. He grew up in a deeply Catholic family and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Antioquia. His priesthood unfolded in rural Colombia, where travel was difficult, poverty was common, and the priest was often the center of sacramental and social life.
He served especially in Angostura, where he became known as “Padre Marianito.” His ministry was concrete: Mass, confession, catechesis, preaching, visits to the sick, care for the poor, and peacemaking among divided families and communities. He lived simply, gave away what he had, and remained close to peasants and ordinary workers.
His charism was rural priestly charity. He was not famous for books or public office; he was loved because he stayed near his people. Devotion to him grew after death, and favors were reported through his intercession. The miracle recognized for his beatification involved the healing of a priest, Father Rafael Gilberto Vélez Saldarriaga, from a severe illness.
Padre Marianito died on 13 July 1926. Pope St. John Paul II beatified him in 2000, making him the first Colombian-born blessed. He is invoked by rural clergy, parish priests, the poor, and Colombian Catholics who remember in him a shepherd who gave his life to one parish, one people, and the daily mercy of the sacraments.
The affectionate title Padre Marianito captures how close he was to his people. He did not serve rural Colombia from a distance; he walked its roads, entered homes, visited the sick, and understood the struggles of poor families. His beatification confirmed a devotion that had grown from lived memory. People had known what kind of priest he was before any formal process described it. His life is one of the clearest examples in the batch of holiness in diocesan priesthood, without religious vows or foreign missions, lived entirely through parish fatherhood.
