Biography and devotion

St. Altmann: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Altmann of Passau was born around 1015, probably in Westphalia, and received a strong education in cathedral schools. He became connected with the imperial court, serving as chaplain, but his later life placed him at the center of the great reform struggles of the eleventh-century Church.

In 1065 he became Bishop of Passau. As bishop he cared for the poor, improved worship, founded and reformed monasteries, and worked to strengthen clerical discipline. He founded St. Nicholas’ Abbey in Passau and was connected with the foundation of Göttweig, which later became one of the great monastic houses of Austria. His reforms were not abstract; they affected clergy, monasteries, liturgy, and the daily religious life of his diocese.

Altmann strongly supported Pope St. Gregory VII in the Gregorian Reform, especially the effort to free the Church from lay control and to restore discipline among clergy. This placed him in opposition to Emperor Henry IV during the Investiture Controversy. The conflict was severe. Altmann was driven from Passau, and the city suffered in the struggle between imperial and papal supporters.

Exile and opposition did not end his work. He continued to support reform, encourage monastic life, and serve the Church as circumstances allowed. He died on 8 August 1091 and was venerated especially at Göttweig and in the region connected with his ministry.

Altmann is remembered as a bishop who paid a real price for reform. His life belongs to the same age as Gregory VII, when the Church fought to recover spiritual freedom, discipline, and holiness in its clergy. He was a builder of monasteries, a defender of ecclesiastical reform, and a pastor willing to lose security for the good of the Church.

His support for reform also shows the danger faced by bishops in the Investiture Controversy. This was not an academic dispute. Control over church offices affected who appointed bishops, how clergy lived, and whether monasteries could follow their rule freely. Altmann’s exile shows that reform could cost a bishop his city and security.
