Biography and devotion

St. Mary of Cleophas: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Mary of Cleophas, or Mary Clopas, appears in the Gospel of John among the women standing near the Cross of Jesus. The text identifies her as “Mary the wife of Clopas,” and Christian tradition often connects her with the mother of James the Less and Joseph. She belongs to the circle of holy women who followed Christ with fidelity when public discipleship became dangerous.

Her life is known mainly through the Gospel witness and later tradition. At Calvary she stood with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and the other women who remained near the dying Lord. This presence is her clearest title to veneration. She did not preach a sermon or leave writings; she stayed at the Cross. In the Gospel world, that was an act of courage, love, and faith.

Tradition also places her among the women who went to the tomb with spices, sharing in the first astonishment of Easter morning. Some later Western traditions associate Mary of Cleophas with the “three Marys” and with missionary legends in France or Spain. These accounts vary, but they show how the memory of the faithful women at Calvary spread through Christian devotion.

Her significance is closely linked with family and discipleship. If she is the mother of James the Less, she is connected to the apostolic circle through one of the Twelve. If she is understood as the wife of Cleophas, she may also be connected with the wider kinship of the Holy Family. The precise relationships are debated, but the devotion is stable: she was one of the women who loved Christ to the end.

St. Mary of Cleophas is therefore honored as a witness of the Passion, a holy woman of steadfast fidelity, and a motherly figure among the early disciples. Her life teaches the holiness of remaining with Christ when there is no advantage except love.
