Biography and devotion
Blessed Virgin Mary: life, patronage, and devotion
The Blessed Virgin Mary is honored by the Catholic Church as the Mother of God, the Virgin of Nazareth and the greatest of all the saints. She lived in the first century and is known through Scripture and the living tradition of the Church. Catholic devotion does not treat Mary as distant from Christ; every mystery of her life points to Him. She is the woman who received the angel’s message, gave her consent to God and bore the Word made flesh.
Mary appears in the Gospel of Luke as the virgin betrothed to Joseph, visited by the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation. Her fiat, “let it be done,” stands at the beginning of the Incarnation. She carried Christ to Elizabeth at the Visitation, praised God in the Magnificat and gave birth to Jesus at Bethlehem. She presented Him in the Temple, heard Simeon’s prophecy of the sword and searched for the twelve-year-old Jesus when He remained in His Father’s house.
In the Gospel of John, Mary is present at Cana, where her intercession leads to Christ’s first sign, the changing of water into wine. She is also present at Calvary, standing near the Cross when many others had fled. There Jesus entrusted her to the beloved disciple, and Catholic tradition sees in that gift her spiritual motherhood toward the Church. After the Resurrection, she is found in prayer with the apostles before Pentecost.
The Church honors her Immaculate Conception, her perpetual virginity, her divine motherhood and her Assumption into heaven. Her life is not remembered for public office, writing or earthly power, but for perfect discipleship. In Mary, humility receives God completely. Her patronage is universal because her motherhood is spiritual: Christians turn to her for purity, protection, family needs, conversion and faithful perseverance. Her greatest work remains the same in every age: to lead souls to Jesus Christ.
A full Marian page can also include the dogmas by which the Church speaks of her: Mother of God, perpetual virginity, Immaculate Conception, and Assumption. These teachings do not distract from Christ; they protect the truth of who He is and what grace accomplished in His mother. Marian patronage is therefore universal, but always subordinate to her mission: “Do whatever He tells you.”
