Biography and devotion
St. Marie of the Incarnation: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Marie of the Incarnation was born Marie Guyart in Tours, France, on 28 October 1599. As a child she experienced a strong attraction to Christ, and later in life she described an early mystical encounter that shaped her desire to belong entirely to God. Her parents arranged a marriage to Claude Martin, a silk merchant, and she became a wife and mother. When her husband died after only a short marriage, she was left a widow with an infant son.
For years Marie balanced business duties, motherhood, and an intense interior life. In 1631, after deep discernment, she entered the Ursuline monastery in Tours, entrusting her son to family care. The decision caused real suffering for both mother and child, yet their later correspondence shows a profound spiritual bond. In religion she became Marie of the Incarnation.
Her missionary call turned toward New France. Inspired by the Jesuit Relations and her own prayer, she sailed to Quebec in 1639 with companions and helped found the Ursuline monastery there. Quebec was still small and fragile, but she became one of the great builders of Catholic education in North America. The Ursulines taught French and Indigenous girls, and Marie worked to learn Indigenous languages so that catechisms, prayers, and instruction could be given more effectively.
She was a mystic, educator, writer, and administrator. Her letters and spiritual writings reveal a woman of extraordinary intelligence and union with God, sometimes called the Mother of New France. She endured fire, poverty, war, epidemics, and the difficulties of mission life without losing her practical courage.
Marie died in Quebec on 30 April 1672. Pope Francis canonized her in 2014. Her legacy belongs to Canada, to the Ursuline tradition, and to the missionary history of the Church: a widow and mother became a contemplative apostle whose classroom helped shape a continent.
