Biography and devotion

Bl. Laura Vicuña: life, patronage, and devotion

Blessed Laura Vicuña was born in Santiago, Chile, on 5 April 1891. After political upheaval and family hardship, her mother, Mercedes, took Laura and her sister into Argentina. There Laura was educated by the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the Salesian sisters of St. John Bosco and St. Maria Domenica Mazzarello.

At school Laura discovered a joyful Catholic life centered on Jesus, Mary, confession, Communion, study, and friendship. She was intelligent, affectionate, and serious about holiness. Her home life, however, was painful. Her mother lived under the control of Manuel Mora, a man whose behavior placed the family in moral and emotional danger. Laura understood the spiritual risk to her mother and began offering prayer and sacrifice for her conversion.

Her story is not merely one of childhood piety. It is a story of courageous love in a wounded family. Laura made a private offering of her life to God for her mother. She suffered illness and mistreatment, and her health declined rapidly. Before her death, she told her mother of the offering she had made. Mercedes, moved by her daughter’s sacrifice, resolved to change her life.

Laura died on 22 January 1904 in Junín de los Andes, only twelve years old. Pope St. John Paul II beatified her in 1988. She is invoked by abused children, young people, families in difficulty, and those seeking purity and courage. Her life shows that heroic charity can appear in a child who loves enough to suffer for another’s salvation.

Her offering for her mother is the heart of the biography. Laura was not reacting to a minor family difficulty but to a situation that endangered her mother spiritually and exposed the family to abuse. Her Salesian formation gave her language for sacrifice, purity, and confidence in Mary Help of Christians. The drama of her last conversation with her mother gave visible fruit to the hidden offering she had made.
