Biography and devotion

Bl. John Angelo Porro: life, patronage, and devotion

Blessed John Angelo Porro was a Servite priest born in Seveso, near Milan, in 1451. He entered the Servants of Mary and became known for humility, prayer, and strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin. His religious life included years of solitude, where he sought deeper union with God, but he was later called back into pastoral service.

In Milan he became especially remembered for teaching children the faith. His catechesis was simple, patient, and affectionate, showing that instruction of the young could be a work of profound holiness. He also served the sick and counseled souls who came to him. The Servite charism of devotion to Mary’s sorrows gave his ministry a gentle, compassionate character.

Devotion to him grew because of healings and favors attributed to his intercession. One of the most famous traditions says that the young Charles Borromeo, later the great cardinal and saint of Milan, was healed as a child through Blessed John Angelo’s intercession. His tomb became a place of prayer, especially for sick children and families seeking help.

He died in Milan in 1505 or 1520, with sources differing on the exact year. His body was venerated, and the memory of his holiness remained strong in the Servite Order and in Milanese devotion. Blessed John Angelo is invoked for children, the sick, catechists, and those seeking humility and renewal through Mary’s intercession.

The connection with St. Charles Borromeo makes the profile especially important for Milan. Charles would become one of the great reforming bishops of the Catholic Reformation, and the tradition that he was healed as a child through Porro’s intercession strengthened devotion to the Servite priest. John Angelo’s work with children also makes that miracle fitting: the catechist of little ones became a heavenly helper of a child who would later renew a diocese.
