Biography and devotion
St. Joachim: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Joachim is honored as the father of the Blessed Virgin Mary and husband of St. Anne. He belongs to the generation before the birth of Christ, and his feast is celebrated with Anne on 26 July in the Roman calendar. He is patron of grandparents, fathers, married couples, and families praying for children and fidelity.
The names Joachim and Anne are not given in the canonical Gospels but come from ancient Christian tradition, especially the Protoevangelium of James. The Church does not treat every detail of that apocryphal text as historical in the same way as Scripture, yet the devotion to Mary’s parents is ancient and deeply rooted. By honoring Joachim, Catholics honor the family into which the Mother of God was born and the hidden preparation of salvation history.
Tradition presents Joachim and Anne as a devout married couple who suffered the sorrow of childlessness. Their prayers were answered by the birth of Mary, who would become the Immaculate Mother of the Redeemer. In sacred art, Joachim is often shown meeting Anne at the Golden Gate, a sign of hope after grief and of God’s blessing upon their marriage.
The holiness of Joachim is quiet. He is remembered not for public preaching or martyrdom but for fatherhood within the mystery of the Incarnation. If Mary was raised in a home of prayer, obedience, and love for Israel’s hope, then Joachim’s vocation was part of God’s providence. His life points to the sanctity of family bonds, the dignity of grandparents, and the way divine promises are often prepared through ordinary homes.
Devotion to Joachim grew in both East and West, and his name became beloved among Christian families. He stands near the beginning of the Gospel story as a righteous father whose daughter would say yes to God with perfect faith. Through him, Catholics remember that holiness can be hidden in generations, prayers, and family fidelity long before the world sees the fruit.
Devotion to Joachim is especially dear to grandparents because he stands at the threshold of the Holy Family. Before Nazareth and Bethlehem, there was the home in which Mary was loved, taught, and prepared. His feast with Anne invites Catholic families to honor the generations that carry faith forward.
