Biography and devotion
Bl. Bernardino of Offida: life, patronage, and devotion
Blessed Bernard of Offida was a Capuchin lay brother born Domenico Francesco Peroni on 7 November 1604 near Offida in the Marche region of Italy. He came from a poor farming family and grew up in the simple work of the countryside, tending sheep and learning the discipline, patience, and poverty that later marked his religious life. As a young man he entered the Capuchins at Corinaldo in 1626, taking the name Bernard and embracing the hidden vocation of a lay brother.
His life was not built around public office, writing, or preaching, but around service. In Capuchin houses he worked in the kitchen, served as infirmarian, begged alms, answered the door, and cared for the ordinary needs of the friars and the poor. At Fermo and later at Offida, he became known for gentleness, penance, Eucharistic devotion, and a remarkable charity that made humble tasks a form of prayer. Though he had little formal education, people came to him for counsel, and Capuchin tradition remembers him as a man of deep spiritual insight.
Bernard spent his final decades in Offida, where his holiness became widely known among the people. He had a particular love for the Blessed Sacrament and for the poor, and his daily life showed the Franciscan spirit of poverty, obedience, and peace. He died at the Capuchin friary in Offida on 22 August 1694, close to ninety years old, after nearly seventy years in religious life. His body has been venerated in the Capuchin church at Offida, and devotion to him continued through reports of favors and miracles. Pope Pius VI beatified him in 1795. He is remembered as a patron of Offida, the poor, the sick, and those seeking humility in ordinary service.
The Capuchin sources preserve the picture of a brother who was at once unlettered and spiritually wise. While assigned to ordinary duties, he kept close to Scripture, the rosary, and Eucharistic adoration. Visitors who expected little from a porter or questor found a man whose words carried unusual peace. His long life, almost the length of the seventeenth century, allowed several generations around Offida to know him personally, which helped explain the strength of devotion after his death.
