Biography and devotion

St. Simon the Zealot, Apostle: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Simon the Zealot was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. He is honored as a saint and is invoked among the apostolic witnesses who carried the Gospel from the earthly ministry of Christ into the missionary life of the Church. In the New Testament lists of the Apostles he is called Simon the Zealot or Simon the Cananaean, titles that distinguish him from Simon Peter.

The Gospels tell little about his individual actions, but his place among the Twelve is already significant. He heard the teaching of Jesus, witnessed the miracles of the Lord, shared in the Last Supper, and received the apostolic mission after the Resurrection. His surname “Zealot” may indicate fervor for the law or association with a Jewish nationalist current, though the exact meaning is debated. In Christian memory, the title became a sign of zeal transformed by Christ into apostolic service.

Later traditions about his mission vary. Some place his preaching in Egypt, Persia, Mesopotamia, or other regions of the East. He is often paired with St. Jude Thaddeus, and in the Western calendar their feast is kept together on October 28. Traditions of his martyrdom also vary, with some accounts describing death by sawing, others by crucifixion or other torments. The variety of accounts reflects the ancient and widely spread devotion to an apostle whose later travels were not recorded in Scripture.

Simon’s importance rests first on his apostolic calling. He belonged to the small company chosen by Christ to become foundations of the Church. His life reminds the faithful that zeal must be purified and directed toward the kingdom of God. Whatever the details of his later mission, the Church honors him as one who saw the Lord, received the Holy Spirit, preached the Gospel, and gave witness to Christ unto death.
