Biography and devotion
St. Placidus: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Placidus is honored in Benedictine tradition as one of the early disciples of St. Benedict. He lived in the sixth century and is remembered especially for obedience, youth and monastic formation. His story is known chiefly through the life of St. Benedict written by Pope St. Gregory the Great in the Dialogues, where Placidus appears as a young monk under the fatherly care of Benedict at Subiaco.
The best-known episode from his life concerns a miracle of obedience. While drawing water, Placidus fell into the lake and was carried away from the shore. Benedict, though not physically present, perceived the danger in prayer and ordered another young monk, St. Maurus, to run and rescue him. Maurus obeyed immediately and, according to the account, walked upon the water without realizing it until Placidus was safe. Benedict attributed the miracle to Maurus’ obedience, while Maurus attributed it to Benedict’s command. The story became one of the classic Benedictine lessons on humility, obedience and the power of spiritual fatherhood.
Later medieval tradition developed a separate martyrdom account for Placidus and companions in Sicily, though historians distinguish this from the earlier and better-attested Placidus of the Dialogues. In devotional use the two memories often became intertwined, presenting Placidus both as a model monk and as a martyr. Care should be taken when writing publicly to note that the rescue from the lake is the strongest early tradition.
Placidus is remembered not because he founded an order or wrote books, but because his youth was formed under one of the greatest fathers of Western monasticism. His life shows the Benedictine path in miniature: listening, obedience, humility and trust that God works through the commands of a holy superior.
For Benedictines, the story of Placidus is often read beside the virtue of obedience. The young monk was saved because another monk obeyed promptly, and both miracle and humility returned to Benedict’s spiritual authority. This makes Placidus a useful patron for novices, students and all who are still learning how to receive formation in a holy way.
