Biography and devotion

St. Peter: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Peter the Apostle, born Simon, was a fisherman from Bethsaida who lived and worked around the Sea of Galilee, especially at Capernaum. His brother Andrew brought him to Jesus, and the Lord gave him the name Cephas, or Peter, meaning rock. From that moment his life became inseparable from the public ministry of Christ.

Peter appears throughout the Gospels as fervent, impulsive and deeply loved. He confessed Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of the living God,” and Christ promised him the keys of the kingdom. He witnessed the Transfiguration with James and John, walked briefly upon the water, protested the Lord’s Passion and swore loyalty at the Last Supper. Yet during the trial of Jesus he denied Him three times. His tears after the denial became one of the most human moments in the Gospel.

After the Resurrection, Christ restored Peter by the Sea of Galilee, asking three times, “Do you love me?” and commanding him to feed His sheep. At Pentecost Peter preached boldly, and thousands were baptized. In Acts he healed the lame man at the Beautiful Gate with John, judged disputes in the early community and opened the door of faith to the Gentiles through the household of Cornelius.

Tradition holds that Peter went to Rome and became the first bishop there. During Nero’s persecution he was crucified, asking to die upside down because he was unworthy to die in the same manner as the Lord. His tomb is venerated beneath St. Peter’s Basilica. Peter’s life is a story of grace transforming weakness into apostolic authority. He is patron of the papacy, fishermen and all who return to Christ after failure.

The keys given to Peter in Matthew 16 and the command to strengthen his brethren in Luke 22 became central to Catholic understanding of his office. His life therefore belongs not only to apostolic memory but to the Church’s continuing sense of visible unity, repentance and pastoral authority.
