Biography and devotion
St. Paul of the Cross: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Paul of the Cross was born Paolo Francesco Danei in 1694 at Ovada in northern Italy. From youth he was drawn to prayer, penance and contemplation of the Passion of Christ. After a period of discernment, he received a strong interior call to found a congregation dedicated to keeping alive the memory of the sufferings of Jesus as the greatest sign of divine love.
In 1720 he made a retreat during which he wrote the first rule of the Congregation of the Passion, later known as the Passionists. The habit he envisioned was black, marked with the sign of the Passion, so that the members would preach by their very clothing the love of Christ crucified. Paul spent years facing delays, poverty and misunderstanding before the congregation took stable form. He was ordained a priest and became a powerful preacher of missions and retreats.
His preaching was not theatrical sentiment. He called people to conversion by placing them before the Crucified Lord. The Passion, for Paul, was the door to hope, repentance and union with God. He guided souls through spiritual direction and wrote thousands of letters, many of which reveal a profound mystical theology of suffering, abandonment, prayer and trust.
Paul was also a mystic. His life included deep prayer, interior trials and a consuming desire that the Church never forget the Passion. He preached especially to the poor, the sick and neglected rural populations. His compassion was practical, but it flowed from contemplation.
He died in Rome in 1775. The Passionist family he founded spread through the Church, giving many saints and missionaries. St. Paul of the Cross is honored as a founder, preacher, mystic and master of devotion to the Passion of Christ.
His spiritual teaching often urged souls to rest in the wounds of Christ and to let suffering become prayer rather than bitterness. The Passionist habit, with the heart-shaped sign bearing the name of Jesus, visually summarized his mission: to keep the memory of the Passion alive in preaching, community and contemplation.
He also wrote thousands of letters of spiritual direction, many of them to laypeople and religious women. In them he taught souls to remain faithful during dryness, temptation and suffering, always returning them to the wounds of Christ as the place where love is learned.
