Biography and devotion
St. Michael of the Saints: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Michael of the Saints was born Miguel Argemir on 29 September 1591 in Vic, Catalonia. From childhood he showed unusual devotion to prayer and the Passion of Christ. He entered religious life young, first among the Trinitarians of the Ancient Observance and then among the Discalced Trinitarians, taking the name Michael of the Saints.
His life was brief but intense. The Trinitarian Order was devoted to the Most Holy Trinity and historically to the redemption of captives. Michael’s own charism was mystical union with the Trinity and a burning love for the Eucharist. He was ordained a priest and became known for preaching, spiritual direction, and compassionate care for souls. In prayer he experienced ecstasies so striking that witnesses sometimes saw him lifted from the ground.
He was also known for penance, humility, and a gentle charity toward the sick and troubled. Devotion to him later became especially associated with cancer patients. A notable healing connected with his canonization cause involved Frances Sanz, whose cancerous tumors on the lip and tongue reportedly disappeared after prayer through his intercession.
St. Michael died at Valladolid on 10 April 1625, only thirty-three years old. His body has been venerated, and tradition speaks of incorruptibility in connection with his relics. Pope Pius IX canonized him in 1862.
His sanctity is not measured by length of life but by intensity of love. As a Trinitarian mystic, he lived the mystery of God not as an idea but as fire in the soul. His intercession remains dear to the sick, especially those suffering from cancer, and to those who need faith that bodily pain can be united to the love of the Crucified and Triune God.
Because he died young, much of his influence came through memory, relic devotion, and reported healings after death. The cancer devotion connected with Frances Sanz gave the saint a very concrete patronage: those frightened by tumors and painful illness found in him a friend who had loved the suffering Christ.
