Biography and devotion

St. Mary Frances of the Five Wounds: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Mary Frances of the Five Wounds was born Anna Maria Rosa Gallo on 25 March 1715 in the Spanish Quarter of Naples. Her family life was hard. Her father, a maker of gold lace, was violent and often treated her harshly. When he tried to force her into marriage, she resisted because she believed God was calling her to a life of virginity, penance, and prayer.

At sixteen she entered the Third Order of St. Francis and took the name Mary Frances of the Five Wounds, expressing her devotion to the Passion of Christ. Unlike a cloistered nun, she lived much of her vocation in ordinary surroundings, first at home and later in a small house with another Franciscan tertiary. Her holiness unfolded in prayer, suffering, and charity among the poor of Naples.

She is remembered as a mystic and stigmatist. Tradition says she bore the wounds of Christ and often wore gloves to conceal the marks on her hands. She endured physical pain, family cruelty, spiritual trials, and humiliations with patience. At the same time, people came to her for counsel, prayer, and help. Accounts of prophecy, ecstasy, healings, and miracles became attached to her life, and devotion to her spread especially in Naples.

Her connection with mothers and childbirth became important after her death. Women desiring children or facing difficult pregnancies came to seek her intercession, and many votive offerings were left in thanksgiving. Her home was later preserved as a place of devotion. She died in Naples on 6 October 1791 and was canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1867, becoming the first woman from Naples to be declared a saint.

Her life shows sanctity in a wounded setting: a woman mistreated in her own family became a sign of Christ’s wounds, a counselor of the suffering, and a heavenly helper for mothers and families.
