Biography and devotion
St. Martin of Tours: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Martin of Tours was born in the Roman province of Pannonia, in present-day Hungary, around 316. The son of a military officer, he was enrolled in the Roman army while still young. His conversion unfolded gradually while he served as a soldier in Gaul, and the most famous story of his life occurred at Amiens. Seeing a freezing beggar with almost no clothing, Martin cut his military cloak in half and gave part of it to the poor man. That night he dreamed of Christ wearing the cloak and saying that Martin, still only a catechumen, had clothed Him.
The vision confirmed his path. Martin was baptized and eventually left military service, believing that the life of a Christian could not be reconciled with violence. He became a disciple of St. Hilary of Poitiers and founded a monastic community at Ligugé, one of the earliest monasteries in Gaul. His holiness attracted disciples, and he became known for prayer, healing, asceticism, and pastoral courage.
In 371 he was chosen bishop of Tours. Tradition says he tried to avoid the office, but once consecrated he became an energetic shepherd. He founded Marmoutier monastery near Tours, preached in rural districts, opposed pagan practices, and defended the poor. His holiness was recorded by Sulpicius Severus, who wrote the Life of St. Martin while memories of him were still fresh.
Martin died at Candes in 397. His shrine at Tours became one of the great pilgrimage sites of medieval Europe. The relic of his cloak gave rise to words connected with chaplaincy and chapel, because the small sanctuary that guarded the cloak was called a cappella. St. Martin is patron of soldiers, beggars, tailors, winemakers, and France, remembered as a soldier who became a monk, a monk who became a bishop, and a bishop whose charity revealed Christ hidden in the poor.
