Biography and devotion
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was born on 22 July 1647 in Burgundy, France, and became a Visitation nun, mystic, and apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She is patroness of devotees of the Sacred Heart and is invoked by those seeking deeper love for Christ and reparation for sin.
Her childhood included illness, family hardship, and a strong attraction to prayer. After recovering from sickness, she understood her healing as a grace connected with the Blessed Virgin Mary and eventually entered the Visitation monastery at Paray-le-Monial. The Visitation Order, founded by St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane Frances de Chantal, formed her in humility, obedience, and hidden charity.
Between 1673 and 1675 Margaret Mary received the great revelations of the Sacred Heart. Christ showed her His Heart burning with love for mankind and wounded by ingratitude, sacrilege, and coldness. He asked for Holy Communion of reparation, the Holy Hour, and a special feast in honor of His Sacred Heart. These revelations were not private consolation alone; they became a major devotion in the life of the Church.
She suffered misunderstanding within the convent until St. Claude de la Colombière, a Jesuit priest and spiritual director, recognized the authenticity of the grace at work in her. With his support, the devotion began to spread. Margaret Mary remained humble, obedient, and hidden, accepting trials as part of her mission.
She died on 17 October 1690. Devotional sources note that when her tomb was opened in 1830, cures were reported, and her body is venerated at the Chapel of the Apparitions in Paray-le-Monial. St. Margaret Mary’s life is inseparable from the Sacred Heart: through her, Christ called the Church to trust, reparation, Eucharistic love, and confidence in His mercy.
Her influence became universal after long testing. The devotion she promoted eventually helped shape First Friday Communion, the Holy Hour, acts of reparation, and the liturgical feast of the Sacred Heart, making Paray-le-Monial a major place of pilgrimage.
Her feast and message later helped shape Catholic prayer in homes, monasteries, schools, and parishes. Images of the Sacred Heart became reminders that the love revealed on Calvary remains living, personal, and Eucharistic.
