Biography and devotion
St. Longinus: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Longinus is traditionally identified as the Roman centurion or soldier present at the Crucifixion of Jesus. The Gospel of John says that one of the soldiers pierced the side of Christ with a lance, and immediately blood and water flowed out. The Synoptic Gospels also speak of the centurion who, seeing how Jesus died, confessed that He was truly the Son of God. Christian tradition later gave this converted soldier the name Longinus.
The historical details beyond the Gospel are not certain, but the tradition is ancient and deeply devotional. Longinus became a figure of conversion at the foot of the Cross. He had been an instrument of Roman execution, yet the death of Christ opened his eyes to faith. In this way, he represents the mercy of God reaching even those involved in violence against the innocent.
Some traditions say Longinus suffered from weak eyesight and was healed when the blood and water from Christ’s side touched him. This is why he has sometimes been invoked for eye ailments and why his story is connected with spiritual sight as well as bodily sight. The lance itself became one of the great Passion relics in Christian devotion, and Longinus is often depicted holding it.
Later legends describe him leaving military service, living as a Christian, and eventually suffering martyrdom for the faith. Whether all such details can be verified historically or not, the heart of the devotion is clear: at Calvary, a pagan soldier became a witness to the identity of the Crucified Lord.
St. Longinus is honored as a convert, a witness of the Passion, and a patron for those seeking faith after sin or spiritual blindness. His life, as remembered by tradition, shows that the Cross does not only condemn human violence; it also converts the heart that looks upon Christ with truth.
