Biography and devotion
St. Leonard of Port Maurice: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Leonard of Port Maurice was born Paolo Girolamo Casanova on 20 December 1676 in Porto Maurizio, on the Ligurian coast of Italy. He became a Franciscan priest and one of the great parish mission preachers of the eighteenth century. His patronage is especially connected with parish missions, preachers, missionaries, and devotion to the Passion of Christ.
After studies in Rome, he entered the Friars Minor and took the name Leonard. Poor health interrupted his early formation, but he recovered and was ordained a priest. The center of his apostolate became the parish mission, a concentrated period of preaching, confession, catechesis, Eucharistic devotion, and moral renewal. He traveled through Italy for decades, calling Catholics back to the sacraments and to a more serious life of prayer.
His best-known work was the spread of the Stations of the Cross. Although the devotion existed before him, Leonard promoted it so widely that he became one of its greatest apostles. He erected hundreds of sets of Stations, including the celebrated Stations in the Roman Colosseum. His preaching on the Passion was intense, practical, and aimed at conversion of life. He also encouraged devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, the Sacred Heart, Eucharistic adoration, and Marian devotion.
St. Leonard was a writer as well as a preacher. His works include sermons, spiritual counsels, and meditations intended to awaken repentance and love for Christ crucified. His asceticism was severe, yet his purpose was pastoral: souls needed to understand sin, mercy, judgment, and the price of redemption.
He died at the monastery of St. Bonaventure in Rome on 26 November 1751. Later generations remembered him as a missionary to Catholic parishes, not because he traveled to distant continents but because he brought the Gospel back into towns and villages where faith had grown cold. His life shows the power of preaching joined to confession, the Cross, and perseverance.
