Biography and devotion
St. Leonard Murialdo: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Leonard Murialdo was born in Turin, Italy, in 1828 and died there in 1900. A priest, educator, social apostle, and founder of the Congregation of St. Joseph, the Josephites of Murialdo, he is patron of youth, workers, apprentices, and those concerned with Catholic social formation. His life unfolded during the industrial and social changes of nineteenth-century Turin, where young workers, poor boys, and families faced new forms of instability.
Leonard came from a devout family but lost his father when young. He studied with the Piarists and later discerned the priesthood. Ordained in 1851, he entered a Turin already marked by the work of great social saints, including St. John Bosco and St. Joseph Cafasso. Like them, Murialdo saw that abandoned and working-class youth needed more than occasional charity. They needed education, protection, spiritual formation, and a place where Christian dignity could grow.
He worked in oratories, schools, and homes for poor boys. He later became rector of the Artigianelli, an institution for young workers and apprentices. There he learned the needs of boys who were employed early, vulnerable to exploitation, and often lacking stable family or religious formation. His pastoral heart turned toward the world of labor before Catholic social teaching was formally developed in the language later used by Pope Leo XIII.
In 1873 he founded the Congregation of St. Joseph to continue this work. The Josephites educated young people, cared for apprentices, promoted vocational training, and formed workers in Christian life. Murialdo also supported Catholic associations, good press, workers’ initiatives, and social action rooted in faith. His spirituality centered on the merciful love of God, humility, confidence, and service to the young.
He died on 30 March 1900 and was canonized by Pope St. Paul VI in 1970. Leonard Murialdo’s sanctity was practical and fatherly. He looked at poor and working youth not as social problems but as souls entrusted to the Church’s love, capable of holiness, responsibility, and hope.
