Biography and devotion

St. Lawrence: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Lawrence of Rome was a deacon and martyr who died in 258 during the persecution of Emperor Valerian. He is patron of deacons, cooks, the poor, librarians, firefighters, and Rome. His life is inseparable from the Church’s early diaconal ministry, because deacons were entrusted with service at the altar and with care for the poor.

Lawrence served under Pope St. Sixtus II. In August 258, Roman authorities arrested and executed the pope and several deacons in the catacombs. Lawrence was spared briefly, according to tradition, because officials believed he could surrender the treasures of the Church. As archdeacon, he administered charitable goods, so the demand was not entirely ignorant. But Lawrence understood the Church’s treasure differently.

He asked for time to gather the treasure. Then he assembled the poor, sick, blind, lame, widowed, orphaned, and needy whom the Church served, and presented them to the authorities, declaring that these were the treasures of the Church. This act of holy defiance became one of the most famous stories of early Christian Rome. It showed that Christian wealth is measured in mercy and that the poor are not an embarrassment to the Church but her honored members.

Lawrence was condemned to death. The traditional account says he was roasted on a gridiron and, in a final act of courage and humor, told his executioners to turn him over because one side was done. The historical details of the method are debated, but the Church has always honored him as a martyr of extraordinary courage and charity. His symbol remains the gridiron.

Devotion to Lawrence spread rapidly. His tomb on the Via Tiburtina became one of Rome’s great shrines, and the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura still bears witness to his importance. He is named in the Roman Canon of the Mass. Lawrence’s life joins worship, service, poverty, and martyrdom: a deacon who guarded the poor as the living treasure of Christ.
