Biography and devotion

St. Laurence of Brindisi: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Lawrence of Brindisi was born Giulio Cesare Russo in 1559 at Brindisi in southern Italy and died in 1619. A Capuchin Franciscan priest, preacher, linguist, diplomat, missionary, and Doctor of the Church, he is patron of preachers, linguists, and missionaries. His life combined extraordinary learning with Franciscan poverty and astonishing apostolic energy.

After his parents died, he was educated by the Conventual Franciscans and then entered the Capuchins in Venice, taking the name Lawrence. He mastered languages with unusual facility, including Latin, Greek, Hebrew, German, Czech, Spanish, and French. This learning served preaching, Scripture, and mission. He was ordained a priest and became famous for sermons that were both doctrinally rich and accessible to ordinary people.

Lawrence held major offices in the Capuchin Order, including minister general, yet he remained a friar of prayer and austerity. He traveled widely through Europe founding houses, reforming communities, preaching missions, and defending Catholic doctrine during the Counter-Reformation. His knowledge of Hebrew enabled him to preach and debate with unusual biblical depth.

One of the best-known episodes of his life occurred during the struggle against Ottoman forces in Hungary. Serving as chaplain and spiritual encouragement to Christian troops, he rode before the army holding a crucifix at the Battle of Székesfehérvár in 1601. The victory was attributed by many to divine help, and Lawrence’s courage became part of his legend.

He was also entrusted with diplomatic missions by popes and rulers, working for peace and Catholic alliances. His writings include sermons, scriptural commentaries, Marian works, and theological treatises; among the most important is the Mariale, a rich expression of Marian theology. He died at Lisbon on 22 July 1619 while on a diplomatic mission. Canonized in 1881 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1959, Lawrence shows how scholarship, preaching, courage, and prayer can serve one Catholic mission.
