Biography and devotion
St. Joseph (Spouse of the BVM): life, patronage, and devotion
St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, lived in the first century and is honored as the foster father of Jesus, guardian of the Holy Family, patron of the universal Church, workers, fathers, families, carpenters, and a happy death. Scripture says little about him, yet what it does say reveals a man of justice, obedience, silence, courage, and tender responsibility.
Joseph was of the house of David and lived in Nazareth as a craftsman. Betrothed to Mary, he faced a mystery beyond human explanation when she was found with child by the Holy Spirit. The Gospel of Matthew describes him as a just man who did not want to expose her to shame. In a dream, an angel told him not to fear taking Mary as his wife, for the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph obeyed immediately, becoming protector of the Virgin and legal father of the Messiah.
His life was marked by repeated obedience. He took Mary to Bethlehem for the census, witnessed the birth of Christ in poverty, heard the shepherds’ testimony, and received the Magi. Warned in a dream that Herod sought the child’s life, he rose by night and fled with Mary and Jesus into Egypt. Later, after Herod’s death, he brought the family back and settled in Nazareth. These actions show a fatherhood expressed not in words but in protection, labor, and fidelity.
Joseph taught Jesus the human rhythms of work, prayer, household life, and Jewish observance. At the Presentation, Simeon and Anna spoke prophetic words over the child. When Jesus was twelve, Joseph and Mary searched for Him sorrowfully and found Him in the Temple. After that, Joseph disappears from the Gospel narrative, and Catholic tradition has long believed he died before Christ’s public ministry, with Jesus and Mary at his side.
Devotion to Joseph has grown steadily, especially through saints such as Teresa of Ávila and through papal teaching. He was declared patron of the universal Church in 1870. His greatness is hidden but immense: he guarded the Redeemer and the Mother of God with faithful, humble, obedient love.
