St. Joseph of Leonessa: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Joseph of Leonessa was born Eufranio Desideri in 1556 at Leonessa in central Italy and died in 1612. A Capuchin Franciscan priest and missionary, he is patron of missionaries, prisoners, the poor, and those who suffer persecution for the faith. His life joined severe penance, fearless preaching, care for the enslaved and imprisoned, and remarkable endurance under torture.
He entered the Capuchins as a young man and took the name Joseph. The Capuchin reform emphasized poverty, preaching, penance, simplicity, and direct service to ordinary people. Joseph embraced this life with intensity. He preached missions throughout Italy, called sinners to conversion, cared for the sick, and showed special compassion for the poor.
His greatest desire was the mission to Constantinople, where many Christian captives lived under Muslim rule. Sent there in 1587, he ministered to Christian slaves and prisoners, especially those condemned to the galleys. He heard confessions, preached, encouraged perseverance, and begged for their needs. His zeal led him beyond safe boundaries. According to tradition, he tried to approach the sultan himself to preach Christ or plead for Christians.
For this he was arrested and tortured. The most famous account says he was suspended from a hook or hooks for three days, suffering terribly before being released or miraculously delivered. Whether every detail is described in the same way by every source, the tradition is clear that he endured brutal treatment and survived in a way regarded as providential. He returned to Italy and resumed preaching with undiminished courage.
Joseph’s later years were spent in missions among the poor, peace-making between enemies, and calling Christians to repentance. He walked long distances, slept little, ate sparingly, and poured his strength into confession and preaching. He died on 4 February 1612. Canonized in 1746, he remains one of the great Capuchin missionary saints, showing the Franciscan love of poverty transformed into daring charity for captives and souls.
