Biography and devotion

St. John Eudes: life, patronage, and devotion

St. John Eudes was born in Normandy, France, in 1601 and died in 1680. A priest, missionary preacher, founder, and spiritual writer, he is honored for spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. His patronage is connected with the Eudists, parish missions, seminaries, and devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

John was educated by the Jesuits and entered the Oratory of Jesus under Cardinal de Bérulle. Seventeenth-century France needed deep clerical reform, sound preaching, and renewed sacramental life. John became known as a powerful mission preacher who traveled through towns and villages calling Catholics to confession, repentance, Eucharistic devotion, and serious Christian living.

His pastoral experience convinced him that the renewal of the faithful required holy priests. In 1643 he founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, known as the Eudists, to form priests and preach missions. He also founded the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge to help women escaping prostitution or exploitation. His charity was therefore both doctrinal and practical: he wanted souls converted, priests formed, and wounded women restored.

John’s most lasting spiritual contribution was his public promotion of liturgical devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Heart of Mary before the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque became widely known. He composed Masses and Offices in honor of the Hearts and wrote about Christ living and reigning in the Christian soul.

His writings include The Admirable Heart of Mary, The Life and Kingdom of Jesus in Christian Souls, and works for priests and missionaries. He died in 1680 and was canonized in 1925. His life joins preaching, priestly formation, Marian devotion, and mercy for the vulnerable. In him, the Hearts of Jesus and Mary were not sentimental images but the burning center of mission, repentance, and pastoral love.

His promotion of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary prepared the way for later popular devotion by giving it liturgical and theological expression. He wanted the faithful to see the Heart not merely as a symbol of feeling but as the interior life of Christ and Mary offered for the salvation of souls.
