Biography and devotion
St. Joaquina de Vedruna: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Joaquina de Vedruna was born in Barcelona in 1783 and died at Vich in 1854. She was a wife, mother, widow, foundress, educator, nurse, and servant of the poor. Her patronage is connected with family unity, Christian education, illness, widows, and the Carmelites of Charity, the congregation she founded.
Joaquina married Teodoro de Mas and became the mother of a large family. Her early vocation was not in a convent but in marriage, household responsibility, and the formation of children. The Napoleonic period brought upheaval to Spain, and her husband’s service and death left her a widow with serious responsibilities. She did not abandon family life in order to become holy; rather, her holiness matured through motherhood, loss, prayer, and the practical demands of charity.
After her children were settled, she discerned a call to religious foundation. With the help of Bishop Pablo Jesús Corcuera, she founded the Carmelite Sisters of Charity in 1826. The congregation joined Carmelite spirituality to active service, especially education of girls and care for the sick. Its sisters opened schools and hospitals, serving people whose needs were both spiritual and bodily.
Joaquina governed with maternal firmness and courage. She lived in a Spain marked by political conflict, anti-clerical pressure, poverty, and disease. During times of war and instability, the sisters continued their works of mercy. She herself suffered illness, imprisonment, exile, and the grief of seeing religious work threatened, yet she remained confident in God’s providence.
Her final years were marked by paralysis after a stroke, which she bore with patience. She died in 1854 and was canonized in 1959. Her life is especially beautiful because it passes through several states of life: daughter, wife, mother, widow, foundress, and suffering religious. In each stage she served Christ through concrete love, giving the Church a congregation dedicated to teaching, healing, and charity.
The congregation she founded continued to grow after her death, carrying schools, hospitals, and works of charity beyond Catalonia. Her life is a strong example of a woman whose first vocation as wife and mother did not compete with later religious consecration but prepared her for it through sacrifice.
