Biography and devotion
St. Gomer (Gummarus): life, patronage, and devotion
St. Gomer, also called Gummarus or Gommarus, was a nobleman of the region of Lier in present-day Belgium, traditionally dated 717–775. He is honored as a married layman, patron of Lier, woodworkers, and husbands and wives seeking reconciliation. His life is remembered because holiness appeared not in a monastery but amid military service, a difficult marriage, and patient charity.
Gomer served in the army of Pepin the Short and spent years away from home. During his absence, the servants and tenants of his estate were treated harshly. When he returned, he tried to repair the harm, restore justice, and live peacefully. His wife, often named Guinmarie or Grimmara in tradition, was difficult and opposed his generosity. Rather than answer bitterness with bitterness, Gomer became known for patience, prayer, and care for those under his authority.
Several miracle stories express this charity. One tradition says that when workers were thirsty, he struck or blessed the ground and a spring appeared. Another tells how he healed or restored a felled tree by binding it with his belt, a story that helps explain his connection with woodworkers and with the girdle relic venerated in Lier. These miracles are not random wonders; they show a nobleman using authority to heal, refresh, and repair.
Gomer eventually withdrew more deeply into prayer and founded or supported a chapel near Lier. After his death, devotion grew around his tomb, and the city of Lier preserved his memory with particular affection. He is a strong patron for troubled households because his sanctity was tested precisely where patience is hardest: in home, property, duty, and marriage. St. Gomer’s life teaches that a layman can become holy by justice, restraint, mercy toward the poor, and fidelity when family life is painful.
The restored tree became a fitting symbol for his patronage. Marriages, households, and communities can appear cut down by sin or harshness, yet grace can bind what has been wounded and give it life again. Gummarus is remembered in Lier because his patient fidelity became a local image of reconciliation.
