Biography and devotion
St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen was born Mark Rey in 1577 at Sigmaringen in present-day Germany. A lawyer, teacher, Capuchin priest, and martyr, he is patron of lawyers, missionaries, and those who defend the Catholic faith with courage.
Before entering religious life, Mark studied philosophy and law at Freiburg. He became known as a capable advocate, but he was disturbed by the dishonesty he saw in the legal profession. His concern for justice, especially for the poor, prepared him for a deeper vocation. He entered the Capuchins, took the name Fidelis, and was ordained a priest in 1612.
As a Capuchin he embraced poverty, prayer, austerity, and preaching. His sermons were clear, forceful, and rooted in devotion to the Eucharist and Catholic doctrine. During the turmoil of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, he was sent to preach in the Grisons region of Switzerland, where religious conflict and political tension were intense. He did not treat doctrine as an abstraction. For Fidelis, Catholic faith concerned salvation, the sacraments, and the unity of souls with Christ.
On 24 April 1622 he preached at Seewis. A shot was fired during or after the sermon, and he escaped the first attack. Friends urged caution, but he would not abandon the mission. On the road he was confronted by armed opponents who demanded that he renounce the Catholic faith. He refused. They struck him down and killed him with swords and clubs.
Fidelis was canonized in 1746 and later recognized liturgically as a martyr. His death was not the result of recklessness but of pastoral courage. The former lawyer who once defended clients in court became a Capuchin who defended souls in the pulpit. His life joins intellectual discipline, love for the poor, Eucharistic devotion, and martyrdom for the unity of faith.
The manner of his death became part of his preaching. He had urged Catholics to remain faithful and called others back to the Church; when the same truth demanded his blood, he did not withdraw it. Capuchin tradition remembered him as a missionary whose pulpit finally became the road where he was struck down for Christ.
