Biography and devotion

St. Delphine, Virgin: life, patronage, and devotion

Blessed Delphine of Glandèves, also known as Delphine of Sabran, was born in Provence in 1284. Orphaned as a child, she was raised under the care of relatives and educated in a religious setting. She is remembered as a Secular Franciscan, a noblewoman, a virgin in marriage, and the holy companion of St. Elzéar of Sabran.

Her life was joined early to Elzéar through an arranged marriage. Delphine had made a vow of virginity, and when the marriage was solemnized the two chose to live as brother and sister, united in prayer, charity, and service rather than in ordinary married life. This unusual vocation was not a rejection of responsibility. They managed estates, served the poor, and sought to make noble rank answerable to the Gospel.

Both became associated with the Third Order of St. Francis. Their home and responsibilities became places of penance, simplicity, and mercy. When Elzéar had to serve in political and courtly duties connected with Provence and Naples, the couple remained bound by a correspondence marked by spiritual affection and mutual encouragement.

After Elzéar died in 1323, Delphine’s life became still more hidden. She sold or distributed much of what she had for the poor and lived in poverty and prayer. She spent time in Naples, Cabrières, and Apt, where Elzéar was buried. Her memory remained joined to his, not as an accessory to his sanctity but as a woman whose own fidelity made possible a rare witness of consecrated love in marriage.

Delphine died in 1358 and was buried near Elzéar in the Franciscan church at Apt. Franciscan devotion honors the couple as a sign that holiness can transform family alliances, rank, property, and marriage into a school of chastity, charity, and shared surrender to God.

Her story also helps explain the holiness of St. Elzéar. The two are not best understood apart from one another: his public responsibilities and her hidden fidelity formed a shared Christian witness. Delphine survived him for many years, continuing a life of poverty, counsel, and prayer that made her a model for widows and secular Franciscans.
