Biography and devotion
St. Bernardino of Siena: life, patronage, and devotion
St. Bernardino of Siena was born in 1380 at Massa Marittima and raised in Siena after the death of his parents. He is honored as a Franciscan priest, one of the greatest preachers of the late Middle Ages, and a patron of communications, advertisers, and those struggling with gambling. His life began amid plague and civic instability, and as a young man he helped serve the sick in Siena during a severe outbreak. After entering the Order of Friars Minor, Bernardino became a priest and embraced the Observant Franciscan reform, which sought poverty, discipline, and evangelical preaching.
His voice was weak at first, but tradition says it was strengthened after prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He then became a tireless itinerant preacher, traveling through Italian towns and drawing enormous crowds. His preaching was direct and practical. He attacked usury, gambling, revenge, luxury, superstition, blasphemy, and factional violence. He also promoted peace among hostile cities and families.
His most famous devotion was to the Holy Name of Jesus. He used the IHS monogram surrounded by rays of light and encouraged families and cities to honor the name of Christ publicly. This preaching was so effective that he was accused of promoting a novelty, but the devotion was ultimately defended and approved. Bernardino was also a reformer within the Franciscan family. He formed younger friars, supported stricter observance, and helped renew religious life through preaching and example.
Among those influenced by his movement were saints and blesseds of the Franciscan reform. His writings include sermons in Latin and Italian, as well as treatises reflecting his preaching on morality, society, and devotion. He died at L’Aquila in 1444 and was canonized only six years later, in 1450. Devotion to him spread rapidly because Catholics remembered not merely an eloquent speaker but a man whose preaching changed public life. He put the name of Jesus at the center of streets, homes, and consciences, calling whole communities to repentance and peace.
His preaching often ended with public acts of conversion: enemies reconciled, sinful objects destroyed, debts reconsidered, and city factions urged toward peace. Because he traveled constantly and preached in language ordinary people could understand, Bernardino became one of the great evangelizers of late medieval Italy. He died at L’Aquila in 1444 while still on mission.
