Biography and devotion

Bl. Eva of Liège: life, patronage, and devotion

Blessed Eva of Liège was a thirteenth-century Belgian recluse and Eucharistic devotee, honored especially for her role in the spread of devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the establishment of the Feast of Corpus Christi. She lived in Liège, in present-day Belgium, and died in 1265. Her patronage is closely connected with Eucharistic devotion, contemplatives, recluses, and those who labor quietly for the honor of the Blessed Sacrament.

Eva appears to have come from a family of means, but she chose the hidden life of a recluse rather than the security and comfort her birth could have offered. She lived near the Church of St. Martin in Liège, where her enclosed life was not an escape from the Church’s needs but a place of prayer, counsel, and spiritual strength.

Her closest connection was with St. Juliana of Cornillon, the Augustinian canoness and mystic whose devotion to the Blessed Sacrament inspired the desire for a universal feast in honor of the Body of Christ. When Juliana suffered opposition and was driven from Cornillon, Eva gave her refuge. After Juliana’s death, Eva continued to support the cause that had marked both of their lives.

The movement found an ally in Jacques Pantaléon, who became Pope Urban IV. In 1264 he instituted the Feast of Corpus Christi for the universal Church. Tradition connects Eva with the papal communication of this act and with the liturgical Office prepared for the feast by St. Thomas Aquinas. She died the following year. Her memory remains tied to St. Martin’s, to St. Juliana, and to the triumph of Eucharistic devotion in the Latin Church.

Liège was one of the great centers of medieval Eucharistic devotion, and Eva’s importance is best understood in that setting. St. Juliana received the original mystical impulse, but Eva helped preserve the cause when opposition scattered its supporters. Her cell near St. Martin’s became a place where the devotion could be protected, discussed, and carried forward. A hidden recluse therefore became part of a movement that entered the calendar of the whole Latin Church.
