Biography and devotion

Bl. Cherubino Testa (Cherubino of Avigliana): life, patronage, and devotion

Blessed Cherubino Testa of Avigliana was an Augustinian priest, friar, and miracle-worker remembered for devotion to the Passion of Christ. He was born in 1451 at Avigliana near Turin into the noble Testa family and died there in 1479, still a young man. His feast is associated with September 17 and, in Augustinian calendars, also with December 16.

From early life he was drawn toward religion rather than noble ambition. Around the age of twenty he entered the Hermits of Saint Augustine at Avigliana, in a convent connected with Blessed Adrian Berzetta. His religious life was brief, but the tradition surrounding him is unusually vivid. He was known for obedience, purity of life, readiness to serve, and a deep tenderness toward the Crucified Lord. Meditation on the Passion was not occasional piety for him; it shaped his days, his prayer, and his reputation among the people who knew him.

He was ordained shortly before his death, and some sources state that he lived only months as a priest. Because of this, his sanctity is not measured by a long public ministry but by the intensity of a short life offered completely to God. Devotional accounts say that when he died on September 17, 1479, the bells of the locality rang on their own, as if announcing his entrance into heaven. Older images portray him with a crucifix and lilies, signs of his devotion to the Passion and purity of heart.

His remains are venerated at Avigliana, and his cult was confirmed in the nineteenth century. The profile should emphasize how brief lives can still leave a strong spiritual memory. Blessed Cherubino belongs among young religious, Augustinians, priests, and those devoted to the Passion of Christ. No extensive writings are attached to him, but his life is a compact witness to contemplative love: nobility surrendered, youth consecrated, priesthood received, and death met with the Crucified Lord at the center.
