Biography and devotion

Bl. Anthony Neyrot: life, patronage, and devotion

Blessed Anthony Neyrot was a Dominican priest, penitent, and martyr. He was born around 1425 in Rivoli in Piedmont, Italy, and died in Tunis on April 10, 1460. His life is unusual among the blesseds because it includes grave failure, repentance, and a public return to Christ that cost him his life.

Anthony entered the Order of Preachers and became a Dominican. While traveling he was captured by Moorish pirates and taken into slavery in North Africa. Under pressure and seeking an easier life, he abandoned the Christian faith, embraced Islam, and married. The fall was real, and older Catholic accounts do not soften it. What changed him was news of the death of Saint Antoninus of Florence, who had been his teacher and spiritual father. The memory of that holy Dominican awakened his conscience.

Repentance took concrete form. Anthony sent his wife back to her family, put on the Dominican habit again, and publicly confessed Christ. He did not try to return quietly to private devotion. In Tunis he appeared before the ruler and declared that he had sinned by denying the faith and now wished to die as a Catholic and a Dominican. The authorities demanded that he retract his confession. He refused. A crowd gathered, and he was stoned to death on April 10, 1460.

His body was later returned to Rivoli by merchants, and his cult was confirmed by Pope Clement XIII in 1767. No long spiritual writings are associated with him, and his importance does not rest on mystical visions or incorruptibility traditions. His witness is the drama of conversion after betrayal. Blessed Anthony is a powerful patron for those who have fallen away, those ashamed of past sins, and those who need courage to confess Christ again after compromise. He shows that repentance can become not merely a return to safety but a path to martyrdom.
