Prayer Requests Before the Relics of the Saints

Placing prayer requests before relics is a way of asking the saints to intercede before Christ while keeping the prayer centered on God.

Why place prayer requests near relics?

Catholics believe that the saints are alive in Christ and can intercede for the Church. A written prayer request placed near relics is not a message sent to an object. It is a reverent sign of prayer, a way of asking the saints to join the faithful in petition before the Lord.

The practice is especially meaningful because relics connect the faithful with saints whose lives bore witness to Christ through suffering, charity, teaching, martyrdom, chastity, healing, missionary work, or contemplative prayer.

Christ remains the center

Every Catholic prayer before relics must remain Christ-centered. Saints do not replace Jesus. They intercede through Him and because of Him. The faithful ask their prayers in the same way Christians ask one another for prayer, but with confidence that the saints are already united to God in heaven.

How to write a prayer request

A prayer request can be simple. It may ask for healing, conversion, protection, peace in a family, strength during grief, courage in temptation, help for children, perseverance in suffering, or gratitude for blessings received. It is enough to write honestly and reverently.

Those who choose a particular saint may do so because that saint’s life is connected with their need. Students may ask the intercession of St. Thomas Aquinas. The sick may turn to St. Peregrine, St. Padre Pio, St. Charbel, or other healing saints. Those in spiritual battle may ask the prayers of St. Anthony of the Desert, St. Benedict, St. Michael, or saints known for courage in temptation.

Privacy and reverence

Prayer requests can contain sensitive details. A good Catholic prayer ministry treats them with privacy, care, and reverence. The written request should be handled respectfully and should not be posted publicly unless permission has been given.
