Biography and devotion

The Martyrs of Otranto: life, patronage, and devotion

The Martyrs of Otranto were the approximately eight hundred men of Otranto in southern Italy who were killed in 1480 after refusing to renounce Christ. They are honored as saints and patrons of fidelity under persecution. Their leader is traditionally remembered as Antonio Primaldo, a tailor or elderly layman whose courage strengthened the others.

In 1480 Ottoman forces captured Otranto after a siege. The bishop, clergy and many inhabitants had already suffered terrible violence, while women and children were taken captive. The remaining men were gathered and ordered to accept Islam if they wished to live. Antonio Primaldo encouraged them to remain faithful, reminding them that earthly life must not be preserved at the cost of the soul.

The men were taken to the hill of Minerva and beheaded. A famous tradition says that after Antonio was decapitated, his body remained standing until the last martyr had died. One of the executioners, moved by the miracle and by the constancy of the Christians, professed the faith and was immediately killed. The bones of the martyrs were preserved and venerated in Otranto’s cathedral and other churches.

Their cause advanced slowly over centuries. They were beatified in 1771 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2013. The miracle recognized for canonization was the cure of Sister Francesca Levote, a Poor Sister of St. Clare who had suffered from advanced cancer and whose healing was attributed to the intercession of Antonio Primaldo and his companions. Their story remains one of the most striking mass martyrdoms in Catholic history.

Their story has particular force because it was collective and lay. These were not all clerics trained for public witness; many were ordinary men of a besieged city, suddenly placed before the ultimate demand. The preservation of their relics in Otranto’s cathedral and the memory of Antonio Primaldo gave the city a sacred history of resistance, not merely military resistance but spiritual refusal to betray baptism. The canonization recognized a devotion already centuries old.

Antonio Primaldo’s role gives the martyrdom a personal center. He was remembered as the first to speak and the first to die, strengthening the others at the decisive moment. The cathedral and the Hill of Minerva became places where the city’s suffering was remembered not only as an invasion but as a confession of Christ.
