Biography and devotion

Bl. Mary of the Angels (Marianna Fontanella): life, patronage, and devotion

Blessed Mary of the Angels Fontanella was a Discalced Carmelite nun, mystic, prioress and foundress from Turin, Italy. Born Marianna Fontanella on 7 January 1661, she came from a noble Piedmontese family and was the youngest of eleven children. Her mother’s family was connected with St Aloysius Gonzaga, and the young Marianna grew up in a world of education, social refinement and strong Catholic memory. As a child she showed a desire for the saints’ life, though she also knew the attractions of a comfortable household and the expectations that came with noble birth.

Against family resistance, she entered the Discalced Carmelite monastery of St Christina in Turin while still young and took the name Mary of the Angels. Carmel gave shape to the deeper desire of her heart: hidden prayer, penance, silence, devotion to the Blessed Virgin and intimate love for Christ. Her vocation was not sentimental piety. She endured long interior trials, assaults of temptation and experiences that Carmelite tradition remembered as both mystical and purifying. These trials did not make her unstable or withdrawn from responsibility. They formed her into a woman of spiritual judgment whom others sought for counsel.

In the monastery she served as novice mistress and prioress. Her authority was rooted in humility and prayer, not in harshness. She was especially devoted to St Joseph, and through her influence a Carmelite foundation in his honor was established at Moncalieri. The convent of St Joseph, inaugurated in 1703, became one of the visible fruits of her hidden prayer. She also lived during difficult years for Turin and was remembered for spiritual support offered to the city and to persons of rank as well as to ordinary souls.

Mary of the Angels died in Turin on 16 December 1717 after a short illness. Her cause began soon after her death, and Pope Pius IX beatified her in 1865. Her body is venerated in the Carmelite church at Moncalieri. The Church remembers her as a Carmelite soul whose mystical gifts, leadership and endurance were joined to practical obedience. Her life shows how enclosure could become fruitful for the wider Church when prayer, suffering and counsel were offered entirely to God.

The best public page for this entry should avoid treating the repeated registry rows as separate persons. The stronger identity is Marianna Fontanella, Blessed Mary of the Angels, the Carmelite of Turin. If duplicates remain in WordPress, they should eventually be merged so that visitors find one full profile rather than several thin versions of the same blessed.
