Biography and devotion

St. Pompilius Maria Pirrotti: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Pompilius Maria Pirrotti was an Italian Piarist priest, educator and miracle worker, born in 1710 at Montecalvo Irpino in southern Italy. He is patron of teachers, students and those devoted to Christian education. His life belongs to the mission of the Piarists, the order founded by St. Joseph Calasanz to educate children, especially the poor, in learning and faith.

He entered the Piarists as a young man and took the name Pompilius Maria, revealing the Marian devotion that marked his priesthood. As a teacher he served boys with patience and zeal, but his classroom work was never separated from the confessional, the altar and the care of souls. He became known for preaching, spiritual direction and a burning love for the Eucharist. Students and ordinary people sought him out because he combined firm doctrine with tenderness.

Tradition credits him with prophecy, healings and other signs of God’s favor. Stories from his life describe knowledge of hidden things, assistance to the sick and remarkable answers to prayer. These gifts did not make him less practical; they strengthened his educational mission by showing students that holiness and learning belong together. He encouraged frequent confession, devotion to Our Lady and confidence in divine mercy.

Pompilius suffered misunderstanding and periods of removal from places where he was loved, a trial common to many saints whose zeal disturbed the comfortable. He bore these difficulties obediently. He died in 1766 at Campi Salentina, where devotion to him remained strong. Beatified in 1890 and canonized in 1934, he is remembered as a priest who taught not only with lessons but with the whole witness of a Eucharistic and Marian life.

His devotion to the Blessed Virgin was especially strong, and Marian piety shaped his way of guiding the young. The Piarist vocation gave him a practical field for holiness: children had to be taught, corrected, encouraged and led to the sacraments. This makes his life valuable for teachers who want education to form both mind and soul.
