Biography and devotion

St. Peter the Apostle: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Peter the Apostle was Simon, son of Jonah, a fisherman from Bethsaida who lived in the first century and became the chief of the Apostles and the first pope. His patronage is connected with the universal Church, Rome, fishermen, popes and those seeking repentance after failure. The Gospels present him as impulsive, devoted, weak at moments, yet chosen by Christ for a foundational mission.

With his brother Andrew, Peter followed Jesus from the fishing nets of Galilee into the company of the Twelve. At Caesarea Philippi he confessed, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” and received from the Lord the name Peter, the rock, with the keys of the kingdom. He witnessed the raising of Jairus’ daughter, the Transfiguration and the agony in Gethsemane. His denial of Christ during the Passion was followed by bitter tears and by the risen Lord’s threefold command, “Feed my sheep,” a restoration that made his weakness part of his pastoral witness.

The Acts of the Apostles shows Peter preaching at Pentecost, healing the crippled man at the Beautiful Gate, judging Ananias and Sapphira, raising Tabitha from the dead at Joppa and receiving the Gentile Cornelius into the Church. These events made clear that his authority was not merely symbolic; it was apostolic, pastoral and missionary. Tradition remembers him later in Antioch and Rome, where his ministry ended under Nero.

Peter was martyred in Rome around A.D. 64. Ancient tradition says he was crucified upside down, considering himself unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. His tomb on the Vatican hill became one of the greatest pilgrimage sites in Christendom, and the Basilica of St. Peter rose above the place of his burial. His life remains a story of election, repentance, courage and shepherding authority rooted in the mercy of Christ.
