Biography and devotion

St. Paulinus of Nola: life, patronage, and devotion

St. Paulinus of Nola was born in 354 at Bordeaux into a wealthy senatorial family. Educated in the classical tradition, he became a poet, magistrate and governor before grace drew him into a life of radical Christian conversion. He married Therasia, a devout woman who shared his desire to turn from worldly honor to the service of God.

After the death of their young child, Paulinus and Therasia renounced much of their wealth. They gave generously to the poor and withdrew from aristocratic ambition. Paulinus was baptized, ordained a priest and eventually became bishop of Nola in Campania. His devotion to St. Felix of Nola shaped his life; he built near the saint’s shrine and wrote poems celebrating Felix, pilgrimage and Christian hope.

Paulinus belonged to a remarkable network of saints and Christian writers. He corresponded with St. Augustine, St. Jerome, St. Ambrose, St. Martin of Tours and others. His letters and poems reveal a cultured mind transformed by humility. He did not despise learning, but he placed it under charity, worship and pastoral service.

As bishop, he cared for the poor, encouraged devotion and lived simply. A famous story tells that during a time of invasion he offered himself in place of a widow’s son taken captive, though the historical details vary. The story captures the way later Christians remembered him: a bishop willing to spend himself for his people.

Paulinus died in 431. He is patron of poets and a model for educated Christians who convert talent, wealth and status into service. His life joins literature, pastoral charity, friendship with saints and love for the shrines of the martyrs.

His correspondence with Augustine and other saints makes him an important witness to Christian friendship. The annual poems he wrote for the feast of St. Felix show how devotion to a local martyr could shape theology, art, architecture and community life around a shrine.
